Yup, you heard that right. The Chinese Valentine’s Day is knocking on your door, begging you to sweep your lover off their feet.

Don’t know what Chinese valentine’s day is? No problem – in this post, we’ll be discussing everything you need to know about this celebration of romantic love, along with some heart-melting gift ideas for your lover.

What Is Chinese Valentine’s Day?

Chinese Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Also known as Qixi Festival, meaning “evening of sevens festival,” this magnificent celebration of love is deep-rooted in Chinese folklore and revolves around the romantic legend of the weaver girl (Zhinü) and the cowherd Niulang

This year, the Qixi Festival will fall on the 15th of August in the U.S., giving you plenty of time to plan something special for your nearest and dearest.

The Qixi Festival Story of Zhinü and Niulang

According to Chinese folklore, Zhinü – daughter of the Jade Emperor and symbolizer of the star, Vega – was bored with her monotonous life in heaven and chose to descend on Earth. Little did she know, she would defy all heavenly rules and fall in love with a mortal man, Niulang – symbolizer of Altair, the brightest star in the Aquila constellation.

Soon thereafter, Zhinü’s mother, the Goddess of Heaven, discovers that her daughter had married a mortal man, prompting her soldiers to descend to Earth and bring her back to heaven. The soldiers obliged, and tragically, the lovers were separated.

In the wake of this devastating loss and profound love, Niulang decided to carry their two children to paradise in search of his beloved wife. The Goddess of Heaven – the ever-controlling mother –, quickly learned about Niulang’s arrival and formed a great river (reportedly the Milky Way) between him and her daughter to separate them for eternity.

Heartened by the pair’s love, a flock of striking magpies, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, created a bridge – later called the “Magpie Bridge” – over the great celestial river to help Zhinü and Niulang finally meet.

Observing this emotional scene unfold from a distance, the Goddess of Heaven had a dramatic change of heart! She, hence, decided to forevermore let the lovers meet on the Magpie Bridge every year on the seventh day of the seventh month. We do not know about you, but we surely are in awe of the couple’s love and beautiful reunion!

So, are you still going to wait till next year to celebrate your love? We hope not. If you decide to celebrate the Qixi Festival with thousands of other lovers, take a look at some of our top gift ideas.
